Sermon Coaching

God has made each person unique. My goal in coaching preachers is to help each one discover and enhance all that God made them to be. One of my mentors described it this way: Preaching is the fine art of becoming yourself in public. That means you are still you in the pulpit, but you are in public. There are guidelines and expectations that are universal which apply to pulpit communication, but you are created uniquely by God and he will use you to communicate his message in a way no one else can. My goal is to help preachers see their strengths and maximize them while learning about weaknesses and how to overcome them.

My Philosophy of Preaching

Preaching is the announcing and proclaiming of a message that is written by God in the canon of Scripture to those willing to listen, for the purpose of bringing glory to Him through transformed lives.

This comes from the two foundational words in the New Testament that refer to preaching: Angello (ἀγγέλλω) to announce, and Kerusso (κηρύσσω) to proclaim. We are the messengers, but we don’t just announce the message, we proclaim it. Announcing refers to the source and clarity of the message and, proclaiming refers to the passion and skill to effectively communicate God’s message.

As to a formal definition my definition – This is based upon the work of my mentors and colleagues:

Expository preaching is the proclamation of a biblical text, by a leader of a church, using sound homiletic principles which includes a central idea or thrust, derived from and transmitted through theological exegesis of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through the preacher to the listeners.
